One of the listeners was John Wilks Booth who mentioned to a friend, "That is the last speech he will ever make." Against his advisers will, Lincoln went unescorted to Ford's Theater with his wife to see a play on April 14, 1865. just after 10:00pm, John Wilks Booth slipped in quietly behind President Lincoln and shot him in the back of the head. Lincoln died the next morning.
